Time for Bed?!? Easing Back in to School Schedules...

by Susan Carraretto, August6, 2009 | Posted in Everyday Sense

My kids do best on a schedule -- which if you knew me, you would think is pretty funny. I am a fly by the seat of my pants, stay up too late, kind of girl.

My twin sister Janice is even more so, and so no matter what time of year it is, she often throws bedtime out the window and wings it. But her kids don't seem to mind. They are flexible and can easily adjust to changes in routine.

During the school year, my preschooler Julia is in bed early and up early. She pretty much eats, sleeps and plays at the same time every day. But with summer comes later bedtimes and family vacations that completely change our routines.

So even if the summer sun still beckons her to play, when school starts approaching, I start creeping bedtime back to her school season hour. In fifteen minutes increments, I start bringing the kids inside and beginning the bath routine.

Getting ready for school with school supplies, back pack and a special outfit, help get Julia in the mood for school and so if she notices that we are getting more rigid with our schedule the excitement makes up for it.

With a few changes here and there, we are soon back in the rhythm and Julia is ready to face the school season rested and raring to go!

I think you're doing it in a good way. Not, the night before school starts, fussing when they don't want to go to bed earlier. With 4 grandkids, I know how they can try mom and dad to stay up later. Routines are great>>>
