Packing Like The Pros

by Susan Carraretto, July29, 2009 | Posted in Easy Organizing

I'm not even close to being a professional packer. But over the last few years, I've been getting a lot of practice. I've picked up tricks and tips from the pros and I've learned from my mistakes -- over and over.

Do you overpack or underpack? I tend to overpack. Trying to reduce my luggage load is my biggest challenge. And when you are traveling with children, it becomes even more difficult to pack lightly.

Here are some tips I have picked up along the way...

  • Plan it! I prefer to be spontaneous and like George Costanza, dress based on my mood. But, with luggage limitations, I've learned to lay out my outfits and coordinate colors to ensure I can reuse items. I also try to check the weather forecast at my destination and determine whether I will be in air conditioned meeting rooms and plan accordingly.
  • List it! I'm lost without a list. A google search will get you started with a list of basics and then you can customize it for your needs.
  • Roll with it! I like to roll each clothing item as I place it in my suitcase. I find it reduces wrinkes and uses the space more effectively.
  • Bag it! I compartmentalize as much as possible. Keeping related items in clear bags helps me find what I want easily. I also put my shoes in clear plastic bags that protect my other garments and allow me to squeeze each shoe wherever I find a space. My carry on bag and purse are heavily compartmentalized with makeup and other necessities each in clear baggies.

Each trip I take I learn more tips and tricks for packing. And now that I've had a few years of traveling with babies, toddlers and preschoolers, packing for a solo business trip feels lighter than ever.

I am lost without a list also! I have a list that I have customized over the years saved on my computer. It has changed as the kids have grown older. Some items on the list, such as diapers and rattles have been replaced with “big boy” underwear and electronic games. We always pack a few plastic grocery store bags to put our dirty clothes in, so we keep them separated from the rest of the items in our suitcases.

Before I even pack, I print out my computer spreadsheet showing each day in a column with activities & weather forecast. Then I write my outfits in appropriate space, always color coordinated for mix/match, noting the temperatures each day. At the bottom I list actions needed before we leave, items we always take, and space for notes as I plan - usually 2 weeks before our trip. I rarely forget anything with this system! Plastic bags and space bags are staples for our packing too.
