Healthy Hints - Safety / First Aid

Med & RX Records

I constantly carry a list of all my prescriptions, allergies, & surgeries in my wallet. I also keep a running list on my computer so I can print it out as needed for a doctor's appointment. Each time I'm given a new RX, the list is updated & goes into my wallet. I also take an extra copy to the doctor for my med file. They really appreciate it & always say they wish everyone would do it. You never know when you'll be in an accident & unable to communicate. ER staff always check wallets & purses first, for ID. Finding that sheet could save your life.

Cleaning Aquariums

My little betta "Fishie" is very happy in his 5gal tank, with large river rocks instead of gravel. When it's time to change & clean his home, I net him out, take out as much water as possible, pull out all the plants & filter, then clean out all the rocks using a very large & sturdy kittie litter scooper. It's strong enough to handle the heavy rocks & with the flat straight edge, it picks up almost everything. Then into a big strainer & the rocks are rinsed with hot water, ready to go back in. Be sure to clean the filter pack & the inside of the filter. 20-30 minutes later & "Fishie's back in his home, happy & ready for a snack. Keep your bettas in a large container instead of a tiny bowl or "betta keeper", they enjoy the extra room.

Baking cake

I enjoy some cake for a snack occassionally. But living alone, I don't often make a full-size mix unless it's for a special occassion. Instead, I keep the small Jiffy cakes in my cabinet. Rather than pull out my mixer & bowl, I mix the cake by whisk in a square glass dish. Make sure the dish is clean & dry then use cooking spray. Add the egg & water together & whisk well, adding the cake mix little by little until mixed completely. Pop it in the oven & you've got cake, with very little cleanup. Yum!

Using large planters

I use packing peanuts in my very large planters for drainage. They don't disintegrate & no heavy stones, rocks or terracotta shards to weigh the planter down. Plus it's a way to get rid of those pesty little things.

Easy Organizing - Storage Ideas

Storing Wreaths

I have several seasonal wreaths for my door. When changing them, I hang them on a hangar, then into a spare closet. Easily organized by holiday or season & can be covered by a small trash bag to keep the dust away. Each particular wreath is now easily found instead of digging out a big storage box.

Crumbs & Keyboards

I do alot of eating while at the computer. To avoid a mess falling on my keyboard, I tuck a full size Scott towel under the front & drape the rest over the keys. Any crumbs or other food drops on the towel & doesn't mess up the keys. Nothing worse than a drop of spaghetti sauce on the spacebar.

Water Globes

Every time I fill my plants' water globes, dirt has accumulated in the stem. I use bamboo skewers to clean the stuck dirt out. The skewer fits nicely alongside the dirt without pushing it further up the stem. Works every time.
