Neat & Clean - Kitchen & Bath

quick tip for cleaning silverware.

I have found that dipping my silverware into a bowl of tomato juice cleans off the tarnish in a hurry. I discovered this hint quite by accident, years ago while canning tomatoes and tomato juice. Joann, Delphi, In.

Getting rid of junk mail.

I have a good sized paper shredder, and I shred all the "black and white" junk mail and put it in "used plastic bags for recycle ever week or so. I do not shred the "colored printed" paper because I am not sure that is reusable because of the ink. So I use separate used plastic bags for it. I do this every day, at my desk at home, but it could be done once a week. I also line my shredder container with several bags, and I also keep (under my desk) several used plastic bags. Clear Non-Stick Ice Cubes

I find that refilling the ice cube trays with warm or hot water gives us clear ice cubes. They also tend to freeze quicker, and do not stick in the tray as much, making removal much easier.

Coupons

There are numerous coupon sites on the Internet where you can print off coupons, not only for groceries, but all other things, as well. (Try PrintCoupons.com, Couponmom.com and eversave.com.) The SCOTT® Brand site has coupons, as does Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Pepsi/Mountain Dew, Coca Cola, etc. Your local papers may have links to coupons too. Look under "search" and type coupons. Good luck.

Healthy Hints - Family Health

Keep Medical Info Handy

My husband and I both keep each others' and our daughter's medical history and prescription information, etc. in our billfold/purse. Our daughter keeps our info in her purse. This came in handy when my husband lost consciousness last year during his heart attack. It saved precious time en route to the hospital and in the ER. I gave the paramedics the list as they left the house with him. Whenever any of our medical information changes, we update all the lists on our word processor.

Everyday Sense - Simple Fixes

Safety around the House

Dryer sheets contain wax and can cause a waxy film build-up on the mesh on your dryer's lint filter screen. If you use dryer sheets, take your lint filter over to the sink and run hot water over it. If the hot water stays on top of the filter, you have wax buildup, and this can cause your dryer to overheat and ruin the heating unit, and/or cause a potential fire hazard in your home. A clean filter also lets your dryer work more efficently and can save energy and money. Use a brush to clean that filter with hot soap and water, and dry it thoroughly before you return it to the dryer. Even if you do not use dryer sheets, clean that lint filter regularly. Stay safe!

Emergency Kits in the Cars/vehicles

It's a good thing to have a ready-made emergency kit or a homemade do-it-yourself kit in the trunk of your cars and other vehicles. Some of the ready-made kits have flares, but we also add a blanket, emergency candles, matches and a working flashlight. We check these things every 3 months or so, to make sure everything is fresh and working well.
