Keeping Lettuce Fresh

When you get a new head of lettuce, take it out of the wrapper & put it in a stainless steel bowl. I put a SCOTT Towel folded up in the bottom to stabilize it. Cover the bowl in plastic cling wrap and put it in the back of the refrigerator. It will stay fresh until the whole head is used up. My grandfather taught me this trick & it has saved me many wasted heads of lettuce. Only wash & use what you want when you need it & then put the head back in the bowl with the cling wrap. I've had heads of lettuce last a month this way.

where is a good place to buy an inexpensive steel bowl? We don't have many stores in this area and our WalMart doesn't have one. Thanks

I do something similar, but a big bowl takes up too much room in the refrigerator. When I bring the lettuce home, I take it out of the plastic wrap, dry it if wet, and wrap it in a SCOTT Towel, then put it in a clean, dry plastic bag and into the crisper drawer of the refrigerator it goes. Doesn't take any extra room and keeps until used up. It also stays crisp and delicious. I also wrap all my cut vegetables like peppers, tomatoes, celery, carrots, onions, etc. in SCOTT towels and put them in the crisper. They keep for weeks without waste.

Wonderful news! I'm 56 years old and can't begin to tell you how much lettuce I have thrown away. Thank you very much and my husband will be pleased!
