No Foam-over

Add detergent to a pail of water AFTER you fill the pail with water. The detergent won't foam that way.

Keep Flower Pots from Leaking Soil

Place a coffee filter or SCOTT® Towel, cut to size, in the bottom of an empty flower pot. Then add your small stones, followed by the fertilized soil, the plant and then the mulch. You won't see soil leaking out of the bottom of the pot when you water the plant.

Preventing Carpet Stains

Have one or two boxes of salt on hand at all times (iodized is not necessary). This sounds strange, but I promise you it really works well. I've been using this method for over 40 years. As soon as the spill happens, I mean immediately...grab the salt box. GENEROUSLY pour and pile the salt everywhere there is liquid. Really pile it on. Now here's the really strange part. Leave it for 24 hours, until dry. The salt will draw all the liquid out of the carpet. After 24 hours, break up the clumps (it gets hard when it dries) and, using a large spatula, throw all the large pieces into the trash. Then vacuum up the remaining salt. Using a nozzle for the last few grains works well. You'll never have a stain again.

Red Wine Spill

Silly me - I spilled a glass of red wine the other night. I remembered hearing that white wine removed red wine, and it does! Of course, I followed up with dish detergent/water, and rubbed and rinsed until perfectly clean. The carpet was clean! Yay!

Recipe Saver

When you are making your favorite dish, put the recipe card in a clear sandwich bag. You can clearly see the recipe, but you don't have to worry about any spills or splatters ruining your card.

Clean Windows

When cleaning windows, use 1 cup of vinegar to 1 quart of water and put it in a spray bottle. Spray windows, then wipe windows down with old newspaper. It cleans well and leaves no streaks. Let the newspaper dry and then put it out to be recycled.
