Getting in your Daily Fruit

Rather than bugging the family to eat more fruit, I make smoothies out of frozen fruit. I bought a small, inexpensive smoothie maker and now keep a wire basket in my freezer with different frozen fruit: blackberries, strawberries, peaches, etc. I can customize the flavors to each person in the family, and add low-fat milk for a quick, fruity smoothie. Fruit yogurt can be added for additional health benefit too.

Easy Strawberry Hulling

Take a straw and insert it from the bottom of the strawberry and push it out through the top. The straw will pop out the green stem and will waste very little of your strawberry.

Miracle Lemon Juice

When making up ice water bottles for everyone before a long drive, add a few drops of lemon juice, and the water will stay fresh tasting, not like plastic. Don't use sugar, though, as it promotes bacterial growth.

Keep Vegetables Fresh!

I always keep a sheet of SCOTT Towels in the bag with my vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator. Salad greens, a cut onion or pepper, even cabbage. The extra moisture is absorbed, and my vegetables and fruit last longer.

End of Summer CANNING FESTIVAL

When canning tomatoes at the end of summer, be sure to keep a roll or two of SCOTT Towels handy. First, wash and dry your tomatoes with clean SCOTT Towels. When preparing your canning jars and after ladeling sauce into jars, use a clean SCOTT Towel to circle the rims and edges of the jars to make sure they're dry.

Healthy Eating

Try to read the labels on the food you buy to see how many calories it has and how much salt is in it. It really makes a difference in how healthy you are. You can still have a special treat now and then. I'm only 12 and I know what I'm talking about. I learned it from TV.

Skimming Fat from Soup Stock

If you do not have time to chill a soup or stock to remove excess fat floating on top, simply take a SCOTT® Towel and let it float on top to absorb grease. Repeat as needed. It saves time, reduces fat content and makes a healthier broth.

Portion Control at Restaurants

My partner and I found that asking for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal and splitting the large portion to a normal portion right away takes away the temptation of eating it all. Eat healthy and nutritious twice -- once at the resturant and once at home. We even trade portions sometimes to get a change of pace.
