Tis Better to Give...

As Christmas is fast approaching, we, as parents, need to teach our children that it is better to give a gift than to receive one. I like to take my four grandsons shopping for their parents and brothers so that they will learn the importance of giving to someone else instead of always expecting a gift. I love to give gifts to others myself, as it really gives me a good feeling inside and I want them to have that same experience of how wonderful it makes your heart feel to give to someone else.

Have A Heart

In these days of rushing around, take time to do something nice for someone else. Let someone that has their blinker on into traffic, give someone a smile, or open a door for someone. You will be making this world a nicer place.

Healthy, Happy Heart

Get out and do what makes you happy. Spend time with loved ones, eat a healthy diet and try to do some sort of exercise -- even if it is something small, like sitting and raising your arms and legs up and down.

Read Daily

Read daily. Go to the library on the weekend as a family and choose several books for the week. Schedule special reading time to share one book with your child every night. This shows your child you value reading and your time together.

Easy Way to Encourage Reading

My son doesn't like to read much. So now without any mention of it, I keep a short library book in the bathroom in front of him when he sits. He ends up reading it out of curiosity. Put a different one in for next time.

Bookmark

Use a color coated paper clip to keep your place in your book. As you turn a page read to the bottom of the paper clip and then scoot the page under the paper clip.

Finding Good Books to Read

Our library has an online catalog, and sometimes I type in the general keyword search for "how to" and it comes up with a few thousand results. Scrolling through, I find a lot of great books to check out that I never would have known about.
