Cord Organizers

To keep cords (e.g., hair dryer, curling iron) from tangling in the drawers, try slipping an empty SCOTT® Tissue core over the folded-up cords. This way, when you need an item, you don't have to untangle the cords to use it. It keeps your drawers neat, too!

3-ring Binders

My best orginization tool is a 3-ring binder. I have a different binder for everything I need at my fingertips, from new recipes I want to try to financial information and health information. It is the best solution I have found to have everything you need.

Never Lose Things Again

This may not be new, but I've been doing this for years at it works like a charm. For items like keys, work badges or remote controls, I always make sure to keep them in the same place. This creates a habit & easy, quick access to important things. Every night when we get home, all work badges, keys & other items we need in the morning go in the same drawer without exception.

Hangers

Most organizing books suggest that you use a different color hanger for each family member. I found that to be more of a hassle, so I got rid of all colored hangers and went to white hangers for all around the house. Not only do I not have to worry about which hanger color to choose for which person, my closets now all look neater.

Sorting Socks

To keep track of which socks belong to which kid, I use different color permanent markers and put a dot underneath the toe of the sock. It's faster than sewing different-colored threads on the socks.

Fridge Door

That bottom shelf in my fridge door is quite low, but holds many smaller items. To make it much easier to locate the correct bottle of sauce, salad dressing, etc. quickly, I write the name on the lid when I open a new item. Now I can tell the Catalina dressing from the French with ease. My smaller children, who can see that shelf more easily, still use these top labels instead of the front labels to locate what they need. (Use permanent marker, when the lid is completely dry, for the best results.)

Organize Once, Remove Paper Clutter Forever!

To consolidate financial documents and other important papers, invest in a file cabinet or similar set-up. For each account I have, I label a folder for that account. After paying the invoice, it's filed in its own folder. After I pay a property tax or a potential tax deductible item, that invoice goes directly into my income tax folder. When I prepare my taxes, all the data I need is in one folder; I don't waste time gathering data from different places or wonder if I forgot a deductible item. Other files hold appliance and electronics manuals and warranty information, which can be quickly located should I need to troubleshoot a problem. When I no longer have the item, the manual is tossed.

Preserving Old Family Photos

If you have pre-digital-era photographs you'd like to preserve, a quick and inexpensive alternative to professional restoration is to scan them into your computer. The improved photo editing software is capable of restoring, to some degree, the washed-out look that comes with age. You can copy the scanned pictures to a CD and have a picture library stored in a very small space. An added bonus to doing them yourself is that with each picture you scan, the good times of that moment are recalled. When I find pictures of relatives, especially the ones long gone, I e-mail them to my other family members so we can all share again the wonderful times past.
