Money-saving Tips for School Lunches

1. Don't buy single-serving foods and drinks. Big jars of applesauce and juice are much more cost-effective than small containers and juice boxes. You're paying extra for convenience. 2. Peanut butter. A perennial good buy and crowd pleaser. Get out of the PB&J rut with peanut butter crackers, a peanut butter and banana sandwich or a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Try peanut butter and rice cakes, or use peanut butter as a dip for apple slices.

Track Your Gas Mileage

Set the trip distance on your odometer to zero the moment you leave the gas station with a full tank. The next time you go in for a fill, fill the tank, but don't top off. Write down how many miles are on your trip odometer as well as the gallons you purchased on the gas pump meter. Divide the miles by the number of gallons and it will give you your approximate gas mileage since your last fill. Keep a log of your mileage per fill for 10 fills. Add these numbers together and divide for your average MPG.

Picky Eater?

If you have an elderly parent or someone who has been ill but would like to join you when you're going out to eat, you can order from the children's menu. No more large, expensive portions going uneaten!

Cheap Cooler

When out and about with the kids and it's time for lunch, ask the waitress (waiter) for lemon with your water. The kids can make their own lemonade at the table using the complimentary sugar or sweetener. Or keep a few packets of flavoring for bottled water in your purse so they can pick their drink. It's much cheaper than soda, and many flavor packets now offer antioxidants and vitamin C, which is much better for them than soda. The money saved can be used to buy ice cream cones!

Vacation Close to Home

Instead of going out of state for vacation this year, we plan to vacation right in our home state, by staying home and taking a few day trips. We are putting a little money away monthly to save for a bigger vacation next year.

SCOTT Doll Clothes

I purchased a plain white roll of SCOTT Towels for my granddaughter to use for art projects. One of her favorite projects is coloring a sheet with markers, then dressing her dolls in it by doing simple cuts or folds, then securing it on the doll with a ribbon or hairband. She is always so pleased with her designer fashions and the compliments on her clever creations. And I'm happy I don't have to spend money on expensive doll clothes!

Flower Buying and Trading

If you walk in your neighborhood and see flowers you like, stop and ask if you can buy a plant from them. Perennials often need to be thinned out, so people are usually happy to give you some or trade with you. It will make your garden flower beds beautiful in no time at all. Get seeds from fall plants -- most have them as the blooms are dying off. Don't be afraid to ask!
